Résumé : The project entitled Smart Waste Management System, carried out by Chaymae Hanida and Chaymae Hanini, aims to design an intelligent waste management system in response to the growing environmental challenges caused by urban expansion. This system integrates several modern technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and mobile application development. At its core, a Raspberry Pi 4 equipped with a camera detects the type of waste (plastic, paper, or glass) using the YOLOv5 object detection model. Once the waste is identified, a servo motor automatically opens the corresponding bin. An ultrasonic sensor then measures the bin’s fill level, and when it is full, a real-time alert is sent through a mobile application developed using Flutter. The backend, built with Laravel and secured via JWT authentication, manages users, logs waste events, and provides a statistics dashboard. The mobile app enables waste management agents to monitor bin statuses, receive notifications, and mark bins as emptied. The system underwent extensive testing: sensors demonstrated accurate measurements, YOLOv5 achieved a 92% detection rate, and data transmission between system components was successfully validated. Despite technical issues such as unstable internet connectivity, power fluctuations, and poor lighting conditions, practical solutions were implemented. This project proves the feasibility and effectiveness of a smart, autonomous, and low-cost solution that improves waste collection, promotes waste sorting, and supports sustainable development goals as outlined in Morocco’s Law 28.00
